To Rise Again at a Decent Hour
Paul O’Rourke is a dentist with a successful practise in Manhattan. His long workdays are punctuated by feelings of unrequited love for his ex-girlfriend, religious disagreements with his long-term hygienist, and frequent cigarette breaks. His evenings are scheduled around Red Sox games. So it goes, until someone begins to impersonate him online. What started as an outrageous violation of privacy soon becomes something more frightening – the possibility that the online “Paul” might be a better version of the man in the flesh. As Paul’s quest to learn why his identity has been stolen deepens, he is forced to confront his troubled past and his uncertain future in a life disturbingly split between the real and the virtual. Longlisted for the 2014 Man Booker Prize, Ferris’ novel is profound, brilliant and funny. Paul’s journey to self-awareness is amusing and thought-provoking, allowing readers to go on their own existential journey.
In the first of this new series by fan favourite Trudi Canavan, readers will find two stunning narratives set amidst a world with a refreshing take on magic and the industrial revolution. The first, Tyen, is a student of “archaeology” whose field work includes raiding tombs for treasure. During a raid he finds a magical book that claims it used to be a woman, a sorceress specialising in bookbinding. In the second narrative, Rielle had grown up learning that magic is a sin, causing her to hide the fact that she could see its after-effects. When she falls in love with the painter Izare, she is drawn into the less savoury parts of town, where the desperate had been known to turn to magic. These events catapulted both these characters out of their comfortable worlds, sending them on the run, and learning new things about their world even as each decision they make may change it.

graphic novel The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil
Dave lives on an island called Here. In Here, everything is perfectly neat. The people are tidy and polite, the streets and parks are clean and well-maintained, and everyone follows their own routines without fail. Dave goes to work every morning where he analyses data and creates charts, and doesn’t think about how neither he nor anyone working at A&C knows what their company does. When home, he draws pictures of the same impeccable street in front of his house. He listens to the same song over and over again. Like everyone else, he tries not to think about There, the place out of Here, where chaos ruled, and nothing is tidy. Except that one day there shows up in Dave’s life in a most extraordinary way...

children's picture book Edgar's Second Word
Audrey Vernick & (illus.) Priscilla Burris
This picture book is a lovely and charming read to share with your first-born with the arrival of a second. Hazel is excited to have a new sibling and can’t wait to share books and toys with him. Imagine her chagrin when his first word turns out to be (as with most children) – “NO!”. When she wants him to play, he says – no. When they are choosing books at the library, he screams out, No!. Poor Hazel is disappointed and tries hard to teach him his second word – perhaps – Yes. But all’s well, ends well when Edgar finally utters his second and maybe third word –“Again, ‘azel?.”

Every year, eight girls are chosen. Two from each grade – four prettiest, and four ugliest. No one knew who started it, but pretty or ugly, once your name is in the list, your life would be forever changed. Told from the views of each of the chosen girls in a particular year, this book explores the reality of what it means to be labelled and objectified based on the standards we’ve created. As these girls live through pressure and pain, their stories show us a picture of how people see themselves, and how they are seen by others, and every way one might affect the other.
